Comparing Top SUVs in Adrian, MI: Ford Explorer vs. Chevy Traverse & Toyota Highlander
The SUV class continues to grow with exciting new models, but few can keep up with the new Ford Explorer and all it has to offer drivers around Tecumseh. This new Ford SUV showcases a powerful lineup of engine options that are sure to add thrill to your daily travels. Plus, its spacious and feature-filled interior will ensure you and your passengers have fun and stay comfortable each time you hit the road for an adventure.
While the new Ford Explorer has many appealing attributes, we understand if it's not the only SUV you're considering. So, to help you narrow down your options, Bell Ford in Adrian is breaking down the differences between the new Ford Explorer and two rivals, the Chevy Traverse and Toyota Highlander.

Design
- The new Ford Explorer is 16.7 feet long and showcases a wide, commanding stance with a sporty, chiseled exterior design. The cabin styling is simpler but still highly attractive.
- Coming in at around 17 feet long, the Chevy Traverse also has a broad stance but is more rounded-off than the Explorer, resulting in a less sporty feel. The cabin is well-designed but doesn't come with many high-quality materials.
- The new Toyota Highlander is 16.2 to 16.5 feet long and features an athletic exterior design that incorporates a boxy front end with a tall rear. The cabin is durable and functional, but some Saline drivers may find it somewhat dull.
Performance
- You'll have three engine options to choose from for the new Ford Explorer. These powertrain options include the base 300-horsepower turbo-four, the optional 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6, and the optional 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6.
- The new Chevy Traverse comes with one engine option. Under the hood of this Chevy SUV, you'll find a 310-horsepower V6 engine that gets the job done but isn't as exciting as the Explorer's engines.
- Powering the new Toyota Highlander is a 291-horsepower V6. While this engine is peppy, it struggles to deliver the potency and verve that the Ford Explorer's engines deliver.
Interior
- Inside the new Ford Explorer, you'll find comfortable, spacious seats in each row. Plus, with up to 87.8 cubic feet of storage area, you'll always have room to haul the gear you want. And loading items is easy thanks to the included power liftgate.
- While the new Chevy Traverse comes with slightly more interior space than the Explorer, it does not come standard with a power liftgate, which means it's a little more difficult to load gear into the storage area.
- The new Toyota Highlander boasts a comfortable interior, but it falls short in several ways. For instance, the new Highlander has several cubic feet less in the rear, meaning less space to haul items.
Technology
- Another highlight of the new Ford Explorer is that it comes outfitted with all the latest automotive tech features. Some standard tech features include remote-start, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- The new Chevy Traverse comes with many similar high-tech features found in the Explorer. However, it comes with a smaller, 7-inch touchscreen mounted on the dash.
- As for the new Toyota Highlander, you'll also find many cutting-edge tech features, many similar to those found on the new Explorer. Although, this Toyota SUV does not come standard with remote-start like its Ford rival.

Safety
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the new Ford Explorer five out of five stars in overall safety, including five stars in the frontal crash test. Additionally, this new Ford SUV comes standard with tons of innovative safety features, many of which are a part of Ford's Co-Pilot360 suite of safety technologies.
- The NHTSA gave the new Chevy Traverse five out of five stars for overall safety but only four stars in the frontal crash test. It also comes standard with far fewer safety technologies than the new Explorer.
- While the new Toyota Highlander comes equipped with a long list of advanced safety features, it only received four stars from the NHTSA in the frontal crash test.
