Tested.com's Adam Savage appeared in a series of videos for the NHTSA, doing what he does best—explaining cool technology.
It turns out, cars these days are more technologically exciting than they used to be. While they were once mere feats of mechanical engineering, new cars have sensors, software, and even rudimentary AI. Automakers like Ford are leveraging this new tech to make their vehicles safer.
Several new Ford models are available with automatic emergency braking systems, including F-Series pickups and the Fusion. Equipped vehicles are able to detect obstacles in the road, particularly the rear-end of another car. Some even use shape recognition to identify human pedestrians. The vehicle compares the speed and trajectory of itself and the obstacle to determine if a crash is likely, and automatically applies the brakes if necessary.
